Chemistry of hydrogen
Chemistry of hydrogen, Hydrogen was discovered in 1766 by Henry Cavendish, whose atomic number is 1. The electronic configuration of hydrogen is 1S1. If we talk about isotopes of hydrogen, then it has three major isotopes First(1H1 – protium), second(1H2 – deuterium), third(1H3 – tritium).
Preparation of hydrogen
1. Electrolysis of water:- With the help of electrolysis of water, you can get hydrogen, in this method when you pass electricity through water, then you get hydrogen and oxygen.
2H2O → 2H2↑ + O2
2. Reaction of acid or alkali with metals:- When we put together an acid or a base with a metal, we get hydrogen. For example, zinc which is a metal and sulfuric acid which is an acid, if these two react, then zinc sulphate and hydrogen are formed. When reacted with zinc and sodium hydroxide you get hydrogen.
Zn + 2NaOH → Na2ZnO2 + H2↑
Zn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2↑
3. Reaction of metal on water:- When you react a metal with water, you get hydrogen, as you can see in the example, when magnesium is reacted with water, then magnesium oxide and hydrogen are obtained.
Mg + H2O → MgO + H2↑
4. By water gas(Bosch process):- Hydrogen can be easily obtained through water gas, this process is called Bosch process, when you react carbon with water, then water gas is formed. After that, when you react water gas with water in the presence of a catalyst, then hydrogen gas is obtained.
(H2 + CO) + H2O → CO2 + H2↑
Properties of Hydrogen
Hydrogen is colorless, it has no color, you can’t see it and if we talk about the taste of hydrogen, then hydrogen is also tasteless, it does not even have any test. Hydrogen is sparingly soluble in water; it can completely dissolve in water. Hydrogen is a High combustible gas; with its help it can easily catch fire anywhere.
Uses of Hydrogen
Hydrogen gas is used in rocket fuel. When vegetable ghee is made from vegetables, hydrogen gas is used in it. Hydrogen gas is used in labs or industries.
